October - Breast Cancer awareness Month Breast Cancer Awareness: Early Detection Saves Lives
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide. While a diagnosis can be frightening, advances in screening, imaging, and treatment have greatly improved outcomes—particularly when breast cancer is detected at an early stage.
Awareness is the first step. Every woman should be familiar with the normal appearance and feel of her breasts and seek medical advice if she notices a new lump, change in breast shape or size, skin changes, nipple retraction or discharge, or any other persistent abnormality.
Breast screening plays an important role in early detection. Mammography remains the cornerstone of breast cancer screening, while ultrasound and breast MRI are valuable complementary imaging techniques in selected women. Modern breast imaging can identify cancers at an early stage, sometimes before they can be felt clinically.
It is important to remember that breast cancer can occur even in women without a family history or obvious risk factors. Therefore, appropriate screening should be based on age, individual risk factors, and national or professional recommendations.
As healthcare professionals, we have a responsibility not only to diagnose breast cancer but also to promote awareness and encourage women to seek timely medical care. Early detection can provide more treatment options and is associated with better chances of successful treatment.
This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let us encourage every woman to know her breasts, understand her risk, participate in appropriate screening, and never ignore a change.
Early detection is not about fear—it is about giving women the opportunity for timely diagnosis, effective treatment, and better outcomes.
